1 John....the gift of Obedience:)

DSCN1745Good Morning Sweet Friends, We continue this morning journeying through 1 John chapter 2. John tells us here, in the first few verses, the purpose of this Epistle is to keep us from sin. He speaks of the atoning power of Jesus to cleanse us from sin and the whole world from sin, and isn't this good news? Amen here;)

Today, I want us to spend time unpacking verses 3-6: We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him. Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

This is one of those verses that throws the theory that if you simply believe in God that you are a Christian out the window. I looked up the definition of Christian, and it was defined as one who adheres to Christianity, an Abrahamic, monotheistic religion based on the life of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. I think the key word here is adheres!

Part of this verse is hard truth…..if you claim to know him, but don’t keep his commands, you are a liar. Yes, hard, but I think the truth is that many of us are missing this KNOWING portion. We may believe in God. We may believe that the Word is inspired by God, but has that belief infected our lives in a way that causes us to live becomes the question? Do we know the man Jesus, or do we simply read of Him?

I know from my own experience that I thought I knew Him for most of my life, but found in my thirties that in all of my Bible study and church duties, that I had never experienced the presence of God. I had missed the Holy Spirit guiding me, because I wasn’t in tuned to the voice, nor truly even listening for it. However, once I shifted to a knowing which came through getting in His word, and seeking His presence and sitting at His feet, I couldn’t help but align my life with the Word. It is truth….when you KNOW Him, you will desire to walk with Him. What I love about this verse it that it offers this gift….if you obey, His love is made complete in you. The past few months I have surely had to step out in obedience in ways that I could not imagine I would be courageous enough to every do, but I have seen the manifestation of this verse so powerful in my life because of it. Just when I thought I knew this love of God, as I stepped out in radical obedience, even hard obedience, I found Him pouring in MORE of His love. The joy of the Lord invading my heart and taking me to a new level calls me to cry out for MORE, Lord! I am reminded of Paul saying that the heights and depths of His love we cannot fathom, and so it should not surprise me that there is MORE, and perhaps I have simply tasted a teaspoon of what He has to give of this lavish love! So we keep seeking!!!!

Today, I challenge you to seek to know Him. I challenge you to listen for that call of obedience that He has set out just for your ears, that may bring you to your "promised land!" I challenge you to follow fearlessly out of love for the one who atones our sins. And I wait to hear of how fearless obedience changes your life? May you find His love more of a reality than you have ever known.

I posted these precious girls with their "love hands," because three days after I made one of the hardest acts of obedience I was called to make, a revival at our school started. To me, it felt like a gift of obedience, because Denise and I and our group of Deuteronomy 6 have been praying endlessly for it! And I had no idea how much joy would come from seeing these girls on fire for Jesus!!!! He knows the desires of our hearts.....so hand it over and choose obedience and be blessed!

Seek. Love. Follow.
